Lauren and Billy were one of my very first photography clients way back in 2021, just shortly after I officially launched my business. I still remember our first session together, capturing their engagement photos at the Palace of Fine Arts here in San Francisco. They were so fun, easygoing, and clearly head-over-heels for each other. So when they reached out to me again a few years later, this time to document the arrival of their first baby with in home newborn photos, I was absolutely over the moon! Getting to reconnect with past clients and witness such a special new chapter in their lives is one of the most rewarding parts of being a photographer.
Today, I’m beyond excited to share a peek into their laid back in-home newborn photo session, one of my favorite types of sessions to photograph!! There’s something so tender, cozy, and personal about photographing a growing family in their own space. It’s where the real moments happen, where routines are forming, and where new parents are settling into their new roles.
These two wonderful humans live in a beautifully curated apartment nestled in San Francisco’s Pacific Heights neighborhood. With big windows, soft natural light, and personal touches in every room, their home was a photographer’s dream! I arrived on a quiet Saturday morning, greeted by their sweet dog Lady (who totally stole the show a few times, hahaha), and got a quick tour before we started the session. They had requested a session that felt natural, relaxed, and authentic, “nothing overly staged,” which happens to be exactly the kind of newborn photography I love to create. 🙂
We kicked things off in the nursery/guest bedroom, a peaceful space filled with soft tones, books, and little details that reflected their personalities. I always love starting sessions in the nursery. It’s usually the most intentionally prepared space in the home before a baby arrives, and it holds so much anticipation and love. (You’ll notice a bunch of details images of their nursery below! 🙂 We took our time capturing those early interactions: baby snuggled in arms, swaddled in a cozy blanket, little fingers curled around mom and dad’s hands. Those quiet, in-between moments are what I live for.
From there, we spent just a few minutes in the kitchen and dining room space. This spot has beautiful views of the nearby park, and you could even spot the bridge in the distance! Well-lit spaces and big windows are what photographers live for when working in someone’s home. What was even better – Lauren and Billy have the most beautiful plants and decor throughout their home! Perfect to incorporate into their images. 🙂
We ended their session in the master bedroom. I often recommend using the bedroom for newborn photos because it tends to be the most naturally lived-in space, and it offers a relaxed, comforting setting for everyone involved. Lauren and Billy snuggled up with their little one on the bed, stealing kisses and laughing through the occasional baby burp or hiccup. These are the kind of moments that don’t require posing—they just unfold. That’s the beauty of in-home sessions.
One of my favorite parts of this session was incorporating their dog, Lady. As a huge dog person myself, I always encourage families to include their pets in newborn photos if they feel up for it. After all, pets are part of the family too! Lady was so gentle and curious, and it was heart-melting to see her nestled up close, giving their new baby non-stop kisses! Including her in some of the images made the session feel so much more complete. 🙂
It’s wild to think that just four years ago, I was photographing these two as an engaged couple! So much life has happened since then, and being invited back to document this next chapter means the world to me. These are the kinds of full-circle moments I never take for granted. One of the biggest joys of my work is building long-term relationships with clients, getting to see their lives grow and change, and being there to preserve each milestone along the way. 🙂
For anyone considering in-home newborn photos, I always suggest keeping things simple. You don’t need a Pinterest-perfect house or elaborate outfits. The most important thing is that you feel comfortable and present in your space. Natural light, cozy textures, and a willingness to slow down and enjoy the process make all the difference. I’ll guide you every step of the way, but truly, the magic is already there, in your connection, your home, your love. <3
Lauren and Billy, thank you, truly, for welcoming me into your home and trusting me once again with your memories. It was such a gift to witness your love as new parents and to capture this sacred, fleeting season for your family. I’m so grateful.
