Your Guide for Taking Photos at Sutro Baths, San Francisco

The Sutro Baths are, in my opinion, one of the most iconic locations for photoshoots in the San Francisco area. They’re one of those spots that tourists aren’t necessarily aware of, and locals will bring their friends and family to see when they’re in town. They might even visit the baths during not-so-busy hours, and not because they make the greatest hiking location, but simply because they’re breathtaking. For that reason, I highly recommend documenting photos at the Sutro Baths! However, there are some things you should consider first, which is why I put together this guide for taking photos at the Sutro Baths for you!

  • Location: 1004 Point Lobos Ave, San Francisco, CA 94121
  • Entry fee: None!
  • Parking: FREE! I recommend parking in the large lot next to Lands End Lookout.
  • Hours: Open 24 hours. I would not recommend this location on a weekend evening, as it will be far too busy. The best times for photos at the Sutro Baths are a weekday at sunset. Alternatively, you could schedule a sunrise photo session. I do think, however, that the sunset at Sutro Baths is worth documenting if you can make it happen in your schedule!

Special notes

This location requires a pretty steep and sandy hike down to the bottom. It is not wheelchair accessible. Additionally, if you’d like those picturesque images standing on the edge of the baths themselves, you’re going to need comfortable footwear. (cough cough no heels 😁) So for my San Francisco City Hall wedding brides who want couples photos at the Sutro Baths following your ceremony, simply plan to bring a change of shoes for this part of your wedding day!

There’s also a small beach that is accessible during low tide! If you want the beachy area as part of your photo session, I recommend checking the tide charts before scheduling your session, as the beach is often non-existent.

This location is perfect for families with older children, maternity photos, couples or wedding photos.

One of my favorite parts about this location is that you can combine it with Lands End, creating a visually dynamic gallery that tells the story of your epic adventure! I love starting in the trees near the parking lot on the Lands End Trail, heading to the Sutro Baths Upper Trail to the lookout, and finally looping back down to the baths themselves. By doing this loop, you’ll get photos in the windswept cypress trees, gorgeous coastal views over the lookouts, and finally, images at the baths themselves. And if the beach is open, you’ve got yet another gorgeous spot for photos!
