Rainy Day Photoshoot Locations, Bay Area

Rainy Day Photoshoot Locations, Bay Area | Skyler Maire Photography

As a San Francisco-based photographer, I completely understand the challenge rainy weather can pose for outdoor photoshoots. Sometimes a simple reschedule isn’t an option. That’s why I put together this list of rainy day photoshoot locations in the San Francisco Bay Area. Don’t let the rain dampen your spirits or your desire for beautiful family photos! In fact, rainy weather can provide a unique and captivating backdrop for your photos. Here are some of the best locations in San Francisco to get stunning photos even when it’s wet outside:

  • Conservatory of Flowers: Located in Golden Gate Park, the Conservatory of Flowers offers a stunning indoor botanical garden that provides ample natural light and a vibrant backdrop for your photoshoot. Think lush greenery and colorful blooms that will bring a timeless and enchanting atmosphere to your images. The best part? San Francisco residents get in for free! For those of you who live across the bay or are from out of town, entry is between $3 – $17 per person. Weekends are slightly more and children age 4 and under get in free. Check out ticket prices here.
  • Palace of Fine Arts: With its iconic architecture, the Palace of Fine Arts is a popular location for photoshoots in any weather. Rainy days can add an extra layer of drama to the scene, as the raindrops create beautiful reflections in the surrounding lagoon. The grandeur of the palace combined with the soft lighting of a rainy day will result in truly breathtaking photos. I don’t typically recommend this location on weekend afternoons/evening because it can be extremely busy. However, I would gladly welcome this location choice any day of the week in rainy weather! Keep in mind that you’ll still want to bring rain gear and umbrellas, as the entire palace isn’t covered.

  • Fort Point: One of my favorite locations in the Bay Area, Fort Point offers a rugged and dramatic backdrop to photos. Located right beneath the Golden Gate Bridge, the historic fort offers a unique blend of architectural beauty and natural scenery, making it an ideal location for moody and atmospheric photoshoots. You’ll still want to dress plenty warm and bring your rain gear, as the center of the fort is completely open to the elements. Parking and entry is completely free!

  • San Francisco City Hall: If you’re looking for a classic and elegant setting for your family portraits, San Francisco City Hall is a great choice! The impressive architecture and ornate details of the building provide a timeless backdrop. City Hall hosts dozens of weddings every day so to avoid the crowds as much as possible, I recommend getting there right when they open at 8am or waiting until about 3pm when it starts to clear out. They’re open to the public Monday through Friday. Sorry, no weekend photoshoots here.

  • In-Home: When the weather outside is less than ideal, why not bring the photoshoot indoors? An in-home session allows you to document authentic and intimate moments with your family in the comfort of your own space. Whether it’s cuddling on the couch, baking together in the kitchen, or playing games in the living room, an in-home session offers endless opportunities for beautiful and meaningful photos.

  • In Studio: While I highly encourage you to explore the cozy corners of your home, as it can infuse your images with a unique personal touch, there are times when a studio space becomes essential. Discuss with your photographer the possibility of utilizing a studio setting, although not all may provide this option. Should you decide to work with me, please note that there is an additional fee associated with studio usage to offset rental expenses. 🙂

  • Embrace the Rain!: Lastly, don’t be afraid to embrace the rain and incorporate it into your photoshoot. Grab some umbrellas, rain boots, and colorful raincoats, and head outdoors to capture the joy and spontaneity of a rainy day. Jumping in puddles, dancing in the rain, or simply snuggling under an umbrella can result in fun and memorable photos that truly capture the spirit of your family. I even have clear umbrellas that I’ll gladly provide to your family during the session!

No matter which location you choose, remember that rainy weather can add an extra layer of magic and charm to your family photoshoot. Don’t let the rain get you down and embrace the opportunity to document beautiful memories that you’ll cherish for years to come! I hope you found this list of rainy day photoshoot locations helpful!
